Prime minister of Israel 1999-2001
|Ehud Barak was born in 1942 in the Kibbutz Mishmar Hasharón. It was listed in the Forces of Defense of Israel in 1959 and served like soldier and commander of a unit of elite and in several other positions of command, like Commander of Brigade of Tanks and Commander of Armored Division, as well as positions in the General staff, between them the Director of the Service of Intelligence. During the War of Six Days in 1967, Barak served like commander of a group of recognition, and in the War of Yom Kipur in 1973 like commander of a battalion of tanks in the south front in the peninsula of the Sinai. In January, 1982 he was nominated a chief of the Division of Planeación of the FDI and he raised to the grade of major general. During the operation "Peace for the Galilee" in 1982, Barak served as vice commander of the Israeli forces in the Lebanon.|
In April, 1983, the biggest general Barak was nominated a chief of the Division of Intelligence in the Headquarters of the FDI. In January, 1986 he was nominated a commander of the Central Command of the FDI, and in May, 1987 Chief of Staff assumed the charge of vice.
In April, 1991, it was named like the fourteenth Chief of Staff General and risen up to the grade of General Lieutenant, the highest of the Israeli army.
After the signature in May, 1994 of the Agreement Gaza - Jericho with the Palestinians, the lieutenant general Barak supervised the redeployment of the FDI in the Stripe of Gaza and Jericho. It redeemed a central role in the conclusion of the peace agreement with Jordan, signed in 1994, and met his Syrian counterpart in the frame of the Syrian-Israeli negotiations.
General Barak was rewarded by the Medal of Distinguished Service, as well as another four mentions for his value and operational excellence.
Barak obtained a graduate's grade in sciences (B.Sc). in physics and mathematics of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (1976) and the second grade (M.Sc). in Systems of Economic Engineering in Stanford's University, California (1978).
In July, 1995 he was nominated a Secretary of the Interior.
It served like the Secretary of State from November, 1995 until June, 1996.
From 1996 until 1999 it served like president of the Labour Party and member of the Knéset.
Ehud Barak was an elect Prime minister of Israel on May 17, 1999. It presented his government to the Knéset on July 6, 1999. Il served like Prime minister and Minister of Defence, up to 7 of mars of 2001.
